Correct Way to Pop a Pimple

Only whiteheads or blackheads can be popped/removed. If you have a papule, pustule, nodule, or cyst, it is highly recommended that you seek help and advice from a dermatologist.

These 4 forms of acne are considered a form of inflamed acne and should never be popped because you can cause severe and permanent damage to your skin by doing so

If you must pop a whitehead because it is simply too painful and/or unsightly, here are some steps you can follow:

1. Thoroughly wash your hands before touching your face.

2. Wash your face with a non-stripping facial cleanser.

3. Use an exfoliant with alpha hydroxy or beta hydroxy acid like Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Salicylic Acid Exfoliant.

4. After exfoliating, gently apply rubbing alcohol on the area of the pimple with a cotton ball.

5. Take a clean washcloth, wet it with warm water, and press it against the pimple for up to 5 minutes. This will help soften the skin and allow the pimple to expel its contents easier. If the pimple pops during this step, skip steps 6 and 7.

6. Sterilize a small sewing needle with rubbing alcohol. Allow the needle to dry.

7. Once the needle is dry, gently poke the centre of the whitehead with the needle. If the contents of the pimple do not drain out on their own, wrap a clean piece of toilet paper around your finger and gently push down and inward to help expel the contents of the pimple. If the contents of the pimple still will not come out, then the pimple is not ready to be popped.
